where to buy ht leads??

Post by gary-pb » 12th March 2012 - 6:52pm

Does anybody know where i can buy some ht leads from for my fastback as i think they need changing. I have had a look online but cant find any anywhere. I will also get a new dissy cap and rotor arm, am i right in thinking these are the same as a beetle.

GSF should be able to sort these parts out for you :)

The alternative is to get some of the 7mm HT lead and put the end fittings on those. Good parts shops may stock it. If the end fittings are original Bosch they may be much better than newer stuff. Always try to get Bosch parts - some brands are far inferior, even to modern Bosch. Never bother to change an original condensor - they don't wear out, and so rarely go bad, it's almost always some other part of the ignition system. The original black coil is far more reliable than a modern third world Bosch blue coil.

I think I may be able to get a fresh stock of New Bosch HD leads. I bought some in a few years ago and they were very popular.
They have the angled distributor ends so are good for both FI or Carbed cars
I can't give you a firm price yet, but I'm guessing they'll be around £40 a set.

Let me know if you are interested.

Excuse my ignorance , but what is the difference between leads for type3 engines and the ones available eg. on machine7 etc for beetles etc ? Is it just the angled dizzy plugs ?
I very nearly ordered a set of these for my fasty.

Because of the different cooling system and the way the leads are routed the lengths are longer for a Type 3 than they are for a Beetle.
The angled ends are only needed for FI models as the distributor is higher to accomadate the injector trigger points. Carbed cars can use either straight or angled plugs.

I got mine from CSP, they look like they are some generic cut to length wires, so you could do it yourself probably

2 sets of Type 1 leads does it for me,but whilst i prefer stock specification cars,my only concern in the engine bay,is that she runs happily!

Ahh yes the leads on mine are a little too short ..could these be type1 leads or would they not fit at all ? I noticed the other day one had been rubbing on the back of alternator mount !

No 1 & 2 leads from a type 1 set will fit a type 3.
No 3 from a type 1 set can be bastardised to make a type 3 king lead
Its not perfect,but it works!
Old stock Type 3 sets do crop up on ebay occasionally,But if Mike's going to have some available, thats absolutely the best solution.
