1968 1600TL Fastback Automatic

Post by Marko » 10th January 2012 - 7:05am

1st off, Hi everybody, this is my 1st post and an introduction of me and my car all in one! my car arrives on Saturday so these are the only pics I have of her as of yet.. I'll update this thread at the weekend when it arrives safe and sound, it's an unfinished project and I haven't even seen it in the flesh yet  it's been sat in my cousins garage for about 6 years and he's a painter by trade (self employed) so the work already done is to a high standard but with so many on going project they have decided to sell this one off so I jumped on it 8)

It's my 1st Type3 having owned 3 bugs in the past it makes a nice change and I'm very excited to get this and crack on and get it finished!!

she's al settled into her new home now, very pleased with her. only welding it requires is the rear inner wings and near subframe area, will pull the engine and box strip the subframe down (IRS type) and send it for powder coating whilst I crack on with any welding required. once that's out of the way it should be plain sailing!

pulled the engine and auto box out today, went pretty well apart from the auto box mount is slightly split, this is most likely my fault for not knowing about supporting the transmission  . if anyone knows where I can find a replacement give us a shout! one of the engine mount rubbers has also seen better days too  not a bad productive day on 2nd day of ownership, the auto-box/tranny have been power washed and look a million times better already 8)

next job- remove rear subframe and suspension

my son helping out!!

last piece from the rear removed and ready fro stripping down and refurbishing. not sure whether I should get them shot blasted and powder coated or just spend hours stripping and then 2pk black them up, any suggestions?

stripped the subframe down to the bare bones this weekend, one of the cv joints fell to bits! I take it if a cv joint is that worn it will come apart very easy? may as well replace all 4 because I intend to do this once so will replace as much as possible 8)

Welcome mate, not too far away from me ;) , I am not at the stage your at yet, doing the engine first then rebuild the body in next 2 years.
I can recomend a place in Castleford for blasting and powder coating, just doing all my engine tinware and cooling items, £80 for the lot. Place called midas touch, just pop it in google.
Look forward to seeing you at some point in the future.

nice one, will check them out, actually power washed them today and they cleaned up quite well, I have some 2pk black so might just do a few bits and see how they turn out!

I seam to be spending days just finding out the cheapest places for parts, they vary wildly in prices from different suppliers, some are cheaper for certain parts and others vice versa! not found anyone selling engine mounts yet apart from in the EU..

spent a few hours today welding in 5 small plates on the front inner wing area, turned out OK after I ground the welds flush and seam sealed it all off! there's something quite satisfying about seam sealing after a hard days graft!!

Image

next will be the rear part of the inner wing at the bottom of the air boxes, that should be fun  someone made a bodge of the welding down there

after a bit of poking around and 5 minutes with an angle grinder and hammer this is all that's left! I'll cut the bottom part off as well and start from scratch, just bought a metal folder so looking forward to having a bit of a play

almost finished this section off, looking OK but not quite how VW did it 43 years ago!! I took my time and ground all the welds down that will be visible when finished.. just one piece to make up that sits at the front and joins the rear valance. I also need to make up a bumper bracket section but that shouldn't be too difficult (providing I get the fittings in the correct location

well that's one side all done, seam sealed and painted in red oxide, will get stone chipped and top coated for a nice clean look, the other side doesn't look as bad but who knows when I start poking around and hitting it with a hammer!!

cracking on with the near side now, almost finished all welding 8) just got the closing panel at back to do but want to seal as much behind it as I can before I do this piece and also the chassis piece that is near the subframe mounting points.

Image

took my time with this piece and did a nice flush job of it, I hate to see ugly welding

had the lovely job of stripping the floor pans this weekend, what a nightmare of a job laid on your back! despite wearing goggles I still managed to get lots of crap in my eyes on every session :( but it was worth it, they look superb now after a coat of red oxide and Schultz, was a bit hard to take a decent pic of the Shultz but you get the general idea :)

small update, been doing a bit more stone chipping whilst I'm waiting for some suspension, brake and subframe parts to come back from shot blasters. also sanded the underneath of the petrol tank, this was really rusty but came out nice! I won't be stone chipping the top as I want it super shiny so when the carpet is lifted it looks nice

crap pics, can't see the texture of the stone chip but it looks the biz 8)
