66 Fastback....
Re: 66 Fastback....
The Type 3 is pretty good in snow, but the tyres make a lot of difference. In '67 there were a few inches of snow in Bristol, and my '59 Beetle still had the original cross-plies on (50,000 miles and only half-worn!), but they wouldn't manage in the snow very easily. Called in at the tyre place on Cheltenham Road (long gone I expect), fitted a pair of Pirelli CF67 Cinturatos on the rear and climbed Nine-Tree Hill (about 1-in-3 gradient). Brilliant tyres, but wore out quicker than ZXs.

Re: 66 Fastback....
Great info Dave.
I fitted my Fastback with brand new XZX's a couple of years ago. My car was originally supplied by Modern Light Cars with crossplies, but ZX radials were an option on Volkswagens in 1966 (it states this in the original instruction manual).
My Garnet Red '59 still wears crossplies, as do my 1956 Oval Cabrio, 1956 Oval Beetle, 1957 Camper and 1947 Beetle.

I've probably said this before, but my Beetle was supplied originally by Modern Light Cars in Holdenhurst Rd, Bournemouth. The '58 Beetle and '64 Variant my father bought new also come from them. Mr Pink was the service manager.
I remember when putting the Beetle onto radials, I thought something was wrong when the back seemed to slide, but it was just the flexible sidewalls compared with the harder crossplies.

Thanks Peter. The position of the coil is correct for early 1600 engines. I have a NOS 6v black one to fit on it when I get the time.purplepeter wrote:Nice pics & Happy Birthday to Your Car Rich!

Re: 66 Fastback....
My lovely old Fastback gets used so infrequently, but in the last seven days, I have used it to travel from Leicestershire to Luton, Central London, Kent, Swindon, Bath, Birmingham and back to Leicestershire, followed by a return trip to Luton airport! Lots of miles added to the odometer which now reads 114,510. People seem to be amazed when I fly past them in the fast lane of the motorway Two people pulled up beside me at traffic lights and asked what kind of engine was in the car! Type 3s are officially amazing!
Re: 66 Fastback....
It still looks stunning Rich, and good to hear to hear its running well.
Have you moved to Leicestershire then?

Looks great Rich, fantastic to see it's being used regularly and that you're thrashing the nuts off it.
See you soon.
