Whats the latest on Historic Vehicle Exemption?

Post by Stuart Sepple » 23rd March 2015 - 3:55pm

We have a Type 3 and Beetle both 1973. Should we get automatic exemption when the tax becomes due or do you have to apply for it. Is it based on Manufacture date or date first registered? Looked on the online site and they both seem still to be eligible for tax.

Thanks

Stuart

Both should be able to be reclassified as historic now. If you take the documents your nearest post office that can tax vehicles you should be able to reclassify them as historic vehicles at which point they become exempt. I think as of April anything manufactured/registered before 1975 will be able to be classified as a historic vehicle.

It's counted from date of manufacture, but first registration is also OK since if it's been registered it must have already been made. If its first registration has been delayed an exceptionally long time, you may be entitled to a refund of the overpayment. You may have to prove manufacture date - there has been some correspondence on what proof is acceptable to DVLA.
Dave.
