Re: New member - Type 3 restoration
So these are the stages we have to go through:
Step 1: LHD to RHD conversion - I would need list of parts. (might stay LHD - being debated)
Step 2: Rub down and paint - Guess what! Absolutely NO rust!!
Step 3: Remove and rebuild the engine - new clutch and fuel injection system(last one got nicked)
Step 4: A wiring loom - a lot of original wiring is missing.
Step 5: Refurbish the Interior
Step 6: I'll keep you posted...
ANYTHING is welcome; please bomb the comments with links, stories, advice, videos, pictures, other websites.
The more the merrier.

Hello Fynn, and welcome. That's a good looking car to start with. LHD to RHD can be done, but it's a lot of work and you would need to find a good RHD dash from a car which was sound!
I suggest you get the car running, MoT (you'll need to change the headlights for UK dipped beams, and put on amber rear lenses instead of the red ones) and get an age-related number allocated before you modify anything else. You can run it with carbs, and change back to FI if you wish later.
Is it running at the moment?

It's not currently running and I have a custom FI system from a beetle inlet manifold with a modern VCI which i was going to try? Is that worth a shot?Editor wrote:Is it running at the moment?

Well, you're the right age to get onto the learning curve for modern FI systems, but I wouldn't have a clue about how to proceed, or what's available and how much it would cost. There may be someone on the forum who knows. Hopefully they'll respond. You're going to need a fair bit of info I suspect.
Don't expect to meet all your targets at one go - I suggest you get the car running first, even if with stock carbs. That will give you an idea of what actually needs attention.

Hello again everyone,
It's been a productive previous week - the Type 3 has been stripped down completely with all interior taken out and grinding has begun It is looking good so far. Almost all dents have been rid of and filler has been added. We have discovered that out of the 5 seats the car came with only 1 of the is actually a type 3 seat and the others are from various beetles, but a car with all the seats is overrated anyway. The old trunk & frunk seals have also been taken out and the type 3 stickers have been removed from the door along with that preposterous glue residue.
Thats all for now but ill include some pictures of the progress down below
Feel free to comment
As you can see, the rear valance has been put to use

Looking good. I may have some seats, though they'll be UK spec lowbacks. When I'm back I'll check if you're interested.

No, sorry Dave - only after high backs
