My 1967 Australian Squareback...

Post by Stebbo66 » 1st November 2016 - 5:44pm

Hi all,

My name is Adam, I am new to the scene so please go gentle on me!!!?
After going on several european road trips (Ninove & Spa) with my mates (Who all have Buses!) I fell in love with the VW Squareback, as it is a perfect family daily driver and looks cool as! 8)

After searching for 6 months I came across an Australian import 1967 Squareback that ticked most of my boxes.
RHD, White, with a good few trick and OG bits, and a good dry floor pan!
After traveling to Portsmouth twice and blowing my wife's Audi A4 S-line up in the process it was home! 8) (Thats a long story!!!) :paranoid:

I am trying to build up its history of previous ownership, so if anyone has info on it that'll be awesome. :D
My plans are to put it back on its original 15 inch steel rims with beauty rings and then lower it to the ground a bit!....as much as it can go whilst keeping it a decent ride!? (Advice again welcome) :)

Here is a couple of pics of how it looks at the moment.

The last image is of how it looked back in 2013. (Ninove Freddie Files) 8)
Crazy really as I was there that weekend in my mates Bus, stumbling about on the Sunday hungover & freezing my nuts off!! 8)

This is how the I want it to look again but lower! Have put up a thread asking suggestions on tyre choice for lowered SB on steels as I'm unsure!?!?

Thanks again for having me, no doubt ill be asking loads of questions, some of them daft I guess!?
I live 2 miles from Santapod so no doubt ill be up at VW Action etc next season abw so would be cool to chat to fellow Squareback owners. 8)

All help and advise, history etc welcome.

Cheers.

Adam (Stebbo) :D

This is my old squareback. I was the first uk owner and registered it at Preston DVLA office. When i purchased it, it was in pretty good condition but still had areas needing work. As a result, i decided to completely strip it down. It required welding to the rear inner wings, usual areas on a Type 3, heater channels had a bit of work, there was a patch needed welding on the floor near the battery and i sourced two nos rear wings from T3D as they were then as the originals had seen better days. I had it painted in the colour it is today, although i think its been painted again since. The original colour was more of a solid white than that which it is now.
Somewhere on my photobucket account i have quite a number of pictures of how it looked when i bought it as well as the restoration work i did on it. I'll try and find them this coming weekend and post some up here for you if you wish.
I last saw it at Action last September up for sale, and really fancied buying it back but the other half had different ideas lol! One day i will have another - they are ine if the best VW ever made and standard height or liwered a little, they still drive superb. Enjoy!!

Hi Adrian,

Thats great, id love to know more about its history and see more pis of it as I've been trying to locate the original UK owner... You! Lol.

I actually parked very close to you in Ninove in2013?!? I was in my mates bus at the time rather hung over!! :wasted:

Im super stoked with it and it drives superb. Any info on it or pics would be fantatic, and thanks for the link.
My plans for it are to sell the wheels, put the stock 15" steels back on and lower it a tad! (I love how it looked on the steels in the above pic)

Cheers dude.

Ok, when I bought the car, it was obviously still wearing its Australian number plates. The guy I bought the car from, who actually imported it direct from Australia, drove the car up the M6 motorway from down south, cant remember exactly where but it drove along without any issues. On first appearance, the Squareback looked in really good condition, which to be honest, it was probably the best unrestored RHD Squareback id seen in a long time. I decided to try and get it mot'd so I could get it registered with British number plates. If I remember it faied on a few things, wheel bearing, corrosion and brakes. I decided to sort out these little niggles as I really wanted to get it registered. I think it took me around a fortnight of working in the garage each evening after work to get it mot ready - took it back for re test and it went straight through with no advisories. Once I had it registered and driven it around for a while, I started seeing more and more little defects in the bodywork especially the rear wings, so I made the decision to take it off the road and strip it down and try and sort the bodywork issues.
This is one of the rear wings I decided to swap
Image
When both rear wings were removed, quite a lot of rot was revealed on the inner wings. This was all duely repaired along with necessary repairs to the floors and heater channels. The more I looked at the rear wings, the more I became unhappy with them. A phone call to Paul Medhurst at T3D soon had a pair of nos wings on their way to me.

The last couple of pictures are the car finished and built up again after id had it painted in, iirc, L87 Pearl White.

Fantastic score of the rear wings wasn't it!;-)
When I brought it I took it to my local VW Specialist (DG motors) and the guy who owns it has had several Squarebacks/Fastbacks over the years.
He commented on how solid it was and the rear wings!

Its booked in next week to have a few things tinkerd with (Shocks, tyres for the steels and 3"-4" drop) ready for Stanford Hall. :-)

Cheers Adrian.

I like the height she sits at. How did you lower it in the end?
