1972 fastback. nwe 532k
Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k
They're M20 Type B wave washers. I can see them illustrated on the web, but can't see a price anywhere. Maybe the club can buy a bag of 100 or fewer for re-sale.
Dave.
Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k
ebay item 111651530781 looks like the sort of thing - £8.50 for 10. Select M20 of course!
Dave.
Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k
Nice one, thanks for the heads up, and the speedy reply.
Back on track now then.

Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k

Cursory glance on mine cant seem to find them, thanks.

Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k
No precise fitting orientation info found yet, which is strange, but
found lots of opinions ranging from lining all the flat faces on the pins
parralel with the tyres. Lining up the bottom pin flats parralel, and lining the
top balljoint notches ( which there are none) to the front off the beam...
to no orientation necesssary///
Makes for fun fitting

Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k
Conclusion.
If the method of adjustment is by rotation of the pins, by use of the flats,
then its fair to say that the ball at the socket end of the pin is eccentric, and
therefore any rotation of the pin, rotates the ball, and re posiitions the central axis of the pin
causing re alignment of the spindles .
If the movement was in reverse, and it was the upper socket that effected the movement, would
there be flats machined on the pin to allow for rotation of a machined part, with a central axis.
I doubt it, but I,ll examine it closer before final torqueing.

Sorted,
While i was looking for notches, grooves, machine marks, as in the case of beetle
balljoints that i,m used to fitting. I wrongly assumed vw type 3 balljoints would be similar.
Well i was wrong. I found paint dots marking them instead.
On the upper balljoint, a blue dot mark was positioned on the chamfer of the ball joint,
that fits into the control arm.
On the lower ball joint, the top threaded pin that is bolted to the control arm, has
a red dot mark on the top of the pin.
Presumably all marks facing forward, and pin flats parallel to the wheel.
Thats what I,m running with.

Still waiting on the balljoint washers and all the brakeline/hose components,
so cracking on with the steering box and mc.
MC needs a good cleanup, I know its working perfect, so I wont be stripping it at this moment in time.
Wire brushed and it came up nicely, all ready for a coat of chrome resin based paint.
Steering box had the same treatment, and looks a bit sweeter.

Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k
More fitting today.
New brake pedal stop plate made and fitted, as there was none previously.
Push rod set and installed to give the correct 5-7mm top pedal movement.
Brake and clutch pedal look ok.
Both pedals operating freely with no obstructions at all.
Front view of master cylinder installed.
Pedal stop plate was fabbed from one of these battery clamp plates
Steering box and damper now installed, and hopefully all the brakeline parts and hoses and connections will soon pop through the letterbox.

Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k
Here is the picture of the orientation marks of the balljoints, top and bottom.
Blue dot on top balljoint chamfered face. And red dot on bottom balljoint threaded pin.
Both forward facing.
I changed the camera setup to improve the clarity of the pictures.
Current progress on the front beam and steering components.
Work moving ahead nicely, plus the picture clarity has improved, showing the layers of dust accumulated over the months.

Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k
Are those bolts not for the front beam?
Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k
And is there no more epic pictures of your rust repairs? It's a super job you've been doing on your Fasty.
Your spot on about the ball joints. I recall the Haynes manual has a relatively helpful explanation.
I recall being at the alignment shop and trying to dial out the positive camber from the front suspension rotating the ball joint spindles but to no avail. Couldn't get it lower then +1.5 degrees. Could of been the ball joints though.

Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k
Thanks for the confirmation, must put the Haynes manual on me christmas list then.
I have more pics, but pbucket initially through in a major spanner, so not all up yet.
Have you still got the fasty.

Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k
Yeah photobucket has ruined the online forums community lol
I would picture the Haynes manual pages for you..... but I haven't really got a legitimate workaround for picture hosting.
Me? Fasty? No, I'm a notchback boy for over a decade. Yup still got it. Have an update come soon too as I finished some work on it Thursday.

On the picture front, i,m lucky that i can use my own website, thats how I got sorted.
Notchback is class, let us know when you get a few pics up.
I,m considering a notchback here in Ireland thats up for sale, it was in the UK and was owned by a
member here too. Currently asking 6.5K euro. Nice looking car.

Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k
You are on the button. Just spent the last hour trying to pin down the washer plate.
And found it. It is indeed front axle clamp mounting bolts and washers. Listed in
the official book as packing.
Great to put an end to that hic up.
Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k
Boom! I haven't even run a type 3 beam for a couple of years now. Just goes to show I'm not losing it haha.
Notchback are most definitely class. Have had one of each of them but it's the notchback that I've loved the most.
I commenced upon some rust repairs today. I most certainly will not be offering five pages documenting my welding abilities lol

Re: 1972 fastback. nwe 532k
I thought the same on documenting my re build, but I,m getting there, and all pics help,
no matter what each of us thinks about them. Someone will always pick up something from them
which is good.

Looking good. Mine will be finished soon. But it is always good to see others and their projects. The pictures help, especially when you can't remember where something was fitted. Everyone's build is pushing me to get mine finally finished. Keep it up.
