Well rain has stopped play, however I managed to make a start first thing and cracked on cleaning up the shroud and low and behold a zero appeared closely followed by faint scribed line 5 degree then a bit of a crank brought up the 27 degree excellent!! I've purchased that model of Gunson not used it yet though , mine cost £84 from a local motor factors gutted. I need to sort out a tachometer before kicking on with any timing. That will all come at a later date.

Managed to adjust the valves today, one valve was slack on cylinder number two exhaust, three valves were slack on 3/4. The gap was in the region of .008 thou is that enough to create the clacking ?? I know time will tell but I've got quite a few jobs to do before I get to the firing up stage. Assuming it starts.

8 thou is a bit wide and will certainly make it noisier, but not overly ridiculous.

Only way to know is to fire her up :)

Can also make a big difference to the combustion. Youve effectively changed the cam profile. You had a valve that opened later, not as far and closed earlier. So you are getting less air/fuel in, and less exhaust out. As ignition timing is related to cam profile then funny things can happen.

So youve done good work, even if it isnt the ultimate cure

Yes those comments make sense, it's amazing really those tolerances are so minor but make a big difference. Will know for sure by the end of the week , cheers.

Ok managed to finish off remaining jobs and fired the motor up and, revving it's nuts off! Like wide open throttle. Now I appreciate it was running faster than normal in the video but this is way faster. The jobs I've done over the last few days are.... Adjust valves, replace coil, clean and re gap plugs static time to 5 degrees, put back pipe work ie air/ vacuum..... Any ideas???

put back pipe work? As is you removed it to do work and then reinstalled it? Or it was missing and youve installed it?

It sounds like youve previously had an air leak, the car has been set up with this leak, now the leak is cured it needs setting up again. probably just a throttle adjustment.

So you have made it better...

Go back to basics and check the throttle valve. Is it closing properly, cable not fouling and holding it open ?

All electrical connections securely home

Have you tried screwing the idle screw in - page 68

The pipe work was there but needed to be removed so I could access stuff, removing number one spark plug is an adventure for me anyway. I was thinking sticking component. I will give it a go firing it up tomorrow with no throttle pedal and see if it goes strait for full throttle again, I'm guessing that will confirm it. Many thanks again peeps.

aahhhh.... possibly sticking throttle cable then

Turn the spindle by hand to close it, and if all else fails / to be absolutely sure just remove the throttle cable from the throttle valve

Check the return spring is working correctly too

Check around the air box just in case you knocked something lose like a hose or sensor - there's plenty of them. Anything that allows air to be drawn in directly will make the engine rev like mad. I once had the gasket fail on the cold start valve when driving home from work. Car was idling fine one second then revving like mad the next. Wound up bodging up a gasket with electrical tape to get the car home.

Had a good look around the pipe work giving them a tug and the vacuum pipe on the de acceleration valve fell off it was in place but not tight I must of disturbed it messing about. Started it up again , it starts better however the clacking is still there. It is central no doubt it does dissipate slightly when revved but you can still hear it.

When you say the noise is central that's a bit perplexing as that is indicating camshaft / crankshaft.

Time for another video ??

Daft suggestion perhaps but have you got some lose tinware rattling about? Anything lose and metal will rattle about in time with the engine revs.

You mention camshaft I watched a vid on you tube it was a camper van which needed new camshaft bearings and noise was identical. I will be checking the tin ware tomorrow weather permitting. Thanks again will keep you posted.

Camshaft is at the bottom of the engine, crank abve

These are camshaft bearings out of a T25 WBX - watercooled derivative of the type 4 engine

This is fairly typical condition, for some reason one set of cam bearings always wears more than the others, I have seen a number of stripdown photos looking very similar. The camshaft journals are still looking fine, not sure what they would be like if they are knocking in the way you describe

From memory the thrust bearing (worn pair below) is at the gear end, which is the rear of the engine. You could try doing a video moving the camera longitudinally along the engine, or even drop the plugs out of 2 and 4 and run it on two cylinders to see if that quietens the sound down.

That doesn't make sense though in the context of the engine not making the tapping sound before you took it in for work doing :? :? :?

Replacement bearings are only £20....... it's the time of getting at them and the rest of the rebuild while you are in there that's expensive

Indeed! It's a mystery, but like I said on one of my earlier postings could just be a coincidence. Checking the tinware will be another job ticked off the list though.

Ok last throw of the dice for me on the clacking. I showed the video to my mate who is a truck machanic he said... Sounds like all VW air cooled engines to me!! Did make me laugh. He suggests I change the oil and filter, and can't understand why it wasn't the first things I did. Anyway it's got to be worth a try. Question the part number for the filter as shown in the Haynes manual is ...AW 18/1.... I went along to the local motor factors and the computer says no. Anyway he thinks he has tracked one down its not the same number but is made by Bosch. I need to know for sure if it's correct before I fit it. Does anybody know the correct part number? Many thanks.

Shouldn't be difficult for a factor to find these - remember the same basic engine was used in the 1.7 - 2.0 air cooled vans ;)

Also try draining your oil, if its got metal in it. The type of metal will give you a clue as to where its come from. My money goes on big end bearings.

I'm with broady, drain and inspect the oil. The type 4 has an additional filtration system I think compared to a type 3, a removable oil strainer. That should have the cover removed and the gauze inspected
Cough cough :D :D

You should inspect properly as you are the one draining the oil

Oh, and don't forget to fill the oil filter with oil when refitting. Someone over on the T25 forum didn't and wondered why he had no oil pressure after a full engine rebuild :tear:

Take a couple of photos to upload too
