Re: Air box water leak issue

No problem, mine was a 71, so a late one, and the drain hose for the metal bit of the fresh air box was on the driver's side. I think it was just a rubber hose pushed over a tube fitting, so probably easy to replace.

Re: Air box water leak issue

Sorry to revive an old thread, but do you think it would be possible to clear the drain hoses without pulling the tank? Pipe cleaners maybe? I've discovered a little leak from my Airbox drain hose so I suspect there's s blockage further along. Hey Chino, fancy seeing you here too! It looks like I a...

Re: Removing a T3 exhaust

Managed to get the old one off today - lots of heat, hammering and a bit of swearing did the trick. The actual box is well gone (even more so now!), but primaries and tailpipe are good, so I will get them off. I think I will keep them with the car when I sell it so the next owner can go back to a co...

Re: Removing a T3 exhaust

Sorry, should have made it clearer what I meant - it's the joint at the bottom where the pipe from the front exhaust ports joins the silencer box. It's the joint where one pipe fits inside the other (flared) pipe and is held by a clamp. I am hoping that the second hand exhaust I am buying will have ...

Re: Removing a T3 exhaust

Thanks for the advice purplepeter - I have managed to loosen the nuts OK, although it's a tight squeeze to get to the top ones. All clamps and clips are off, but the connections to the heat exchangers are stuck together pretty well, so it won't come loose. Any suggestions as to how best to deal with...

Removing a T3 exhaust

I need to get my exhaust off to either repair it or replace, depending on whether and how quickly I can get a different one. I am assuming that it fits to the rear of the heads using studs and to the heat exchangers using clamps. The clamps should be no problem, but what is access like to the studs?...

Which battery for my Fastback

Now that my Fastback is up for sale, I have been charging the battery to get it started and MoTd, but I can't get enough charge in to turn it over for more than one starting attempt. The battery has never been particularly good and even of I leave it disconnected, it loses all charge in a week or tw...

Re: orange fastback

There are various hoods fitted, but I can't imaging they stop much of the wet. When mine is sitting, I leave a couple of clear plastic panels with magnetic strip round the edges. In the winter, I still got a spot or two of water on the rubber mat, but think it must have been condensation, as it did...

Re: orange fastback

Nice job on the airbox, as Dave said that is an unusual rust pattern, especially as the tray inside does not appear to have rusted through. My Fastback, having been dry-stored for 30 years is in fantastic solid condition throughout, apart from the airbox. Just after I got it, I realised that it leak...

Re: My new Fastback

During this past week, I got some paint on the inner wings: http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss283/cbst3/P1050407.jpg http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss283/cbst3/P1050405.jpg Then got the wings back on: http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss283/cbst3/P1050422.jpg Looking better up inside them no...

Re: Wing re-fitting and paint codes

Thanks Dave, have had a look at that tape and it looks like it would do the trick, but haven't been able to find any locally of the right size. What I have got is a tube of roof and gutter sealant, which is a butyl rubber substance that is waterproof and hardwearing, and will stay flexible. I have a...

Re: Wing re-fitting and paint codes

Ordered some paint from "Paints4U" on-line in the end and it has turned out to be a pretty good match. Have been searching for a suitable mastic, and have discounted most types as they are adhesives, and I don't want the wings permanently stuck on. Have found some mastic strips though, designed for ...

Re: Wing re-fitting and paint codes

Thanks Mike and Dave, I'll avoid any silicon and see if I can find any suitable mastic. Comment noted on the paint, any on-line suppliers worth dealing with instead? For the inner arches I'm not too worried about an exact match, but I'd like to use it on the body in places so would prefer a good mat...

Wing re-fitting and paint codes

Couple of questions: 1) Although Halfords can mix Marina Blue paint, they have two similar codes, 54D and 54D/R and can't say which is the correct match for my L54D. Has anyone had any experience of this? Which is the correct one? 2) Where the back of the wing bolts on, just in front of the door, th...

Re: My new Fastback

Spent this lunchtime looking at the wings, and although they are mostly fine, they are both a bit thin at the top corner, with some bubbles in the paint on the outside where rust has gone right through, although there are no actual holes. The return where they bolt on is thin in places, although it ...

This last weekend, I got the passenger side wing off and started attacking all the rusty bits with a wire brush and kurust, like so: http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss283/cbst3/P1050391.jpg and: http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss283/cbst3/P1050392.jpg and: http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss...

Re: My new Fastback

Been a while since I updated this thread on here, so about time that I did... When the MoT was due this year, I was a bit short of time and money, so I decided to take the car off the road and do a few jobs on it. The idea being that I would get it MoT'd during April, ready for a trip to Stanford Ha...

Re: Airbox drain hole access?

Hi Dave, Thanks for that response, did you repair the deflector plate from above then, or did you manage to remove it. Mine had rusted through like this: http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss283/cbst3/P1030074.jpg so I liberally covered it with kurust and stuck a patch on the underneath to stop the ...

Re: Airbox drain hole access?

I have been repairing this area on my Fastback recently so I decided to add a few pictures of my solution. After cutting the top of the outside off to get access to repair the rust I decided to make an access flap so it is easy to keep the drain hole unbloked and also to reapair if it does rust in ...

Fuel pipe went on last week, wanted to put in a right angle copper pipe fitting in the middle to avoid having to bend the pipe, but I couldn't find one and I am not sure that it would fit anyway. Ended up curving the pipe and will have to keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't kink. So, after cha...

Thanks for the tip Dave, I'll give that pipe a clean as best I can and get some Waxoyl up in there.

Some 15mm I/D fuel pipe arrived today so I should be able to get the breather sorted later - it'll be nice to be able to go round left hand bends without spreading petrol over the road!

Getting a bit fed up with the petrol smell from the leaking vent, so had a go at it this weekend. Got it up on axle stands, got the wheel off and cleaned it up a little around the filler pipes. Got the old vent hose off - you can see the holes in the picture below: http://i584.photobucket.com/albums...

You're very lucky - mine was blocked, but had rusted through in places, so the water was coming in through the rust holes. Hose is now unblocked and I have patched up the holes as best I can without welding, so I too am dry inside.

I too have this issue - I can see that petrol is coming out of this pipe and has taken off the underseal in a line down the inner wing. Firstly, does the wing need to come off to get to this pipe? I was going to take the wing off at some point anyway to give it all a good clean behind, so if I can f...
