Re: Engine rebuild project

Well, more progress, Made the bosses to be welded on for the side flow oil conversion, for anyone who doesn't follow what im welding ports on for, its actually about the same cost to have the ports welded on as to buy a full flow pump cover & this way uses far less fittings so reduces the flow much ...

To say Ive had my thumb up my arse on this would be an understatement, my whole arm would prob still be on the shy side but time seems to no longer be as freely available since the little fella arrived ,anyway, "moving forward" as they say when you d...

painting fan housings

Ive cleaned my fan housing with petrol & will give it a final wipe over with brake cleaner / thinners but what can I paint it with?

I was thinking of getting some hi temp silver spray either engine block or brake caliper stuff, will this be ok?

Re: My Engine build

Good work Harley, you might have started at the same stage as me but your certainly racing ahead, Im not getting the time I need to put into this really, with Christmas & a bub on the way in Feb its been a bit hectic round here! So are you having the case machined or just switching the bearings out?...

Re: Engine rebuild project

SCRREEEEECCCH, Stop the wagon, we've hit a bump,,!! Now I said above I followed the huelsmann way, and now find myself in the tricky what to do with what is known as No4 plug which has a restrictor attached to the back of it limiting oil to No4 bearing assembly. There’s a lot of input & theory bashi...

Re: Engine rebuild project

Got it out thanks, used a small pair of water pump pliers. Spent a couple of hours & a few litres of old petrol washing 42years of grime away, https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc1/1003788_10151820485955896_1517878253_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-frc3/1425...

Re: Full flow conversion mods.

Found these posts in my dragging through the web, To mount a full-flow oil pump cover, you have several options as to how to deal with the fan shroud, but only one for dealing with the crossmember. In the case of the latter problem, you have to hack out a square section, plain and simple. You can us...

Re: Engine rebuild project

to be honest & within reason, Im looking for the simplest & most modification free option not just the cheapest. Will look into how to do an external cooler conversion, if it gives a better temp control & is an improvement in its own right as well as just the filtration up grade then I would conside...

Re: Engine rebuild project

Good point, on looking at my lump while the upper port is just as wide etc the stud would need to be quiet small in dia & short due to how close the dist opening comes to the oil way. https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/s403x403/1378365_10151723948850896_619254386_n.jpg Only thing...

Re: Engine rebuild project

Still struggling with the full flow conversion, cant decide whether to use a pump adaptor plate & "Clearance" the fan housing & support bar or to go for a casing conversion by welding ports onto the oil ways or even using 90' hydraulic fittings as Broadly suggested, http://i929.photobucket.com/album...

Re: Engine rebuild project

Well, No physical progress with this but,,, lots of web site shopping & planning been going on! So, at the present plan,, Im going to go for a 1776 upgrade, aside from the posts on here the main thing that convinced me was reading books on tuning & rebuilding & the comments on how the easiest & most...

Re: choosing heads

Cheers, there page reads like there the same as the ACN ones which are on special for less but Ive emailed DRD to ask about them. I assume you'd be wasting your time running stock carbs on a 1776 with these heads & a w100 style cam? Also would it be better to get them pre cut for 90.5 or to get stoc...

Re: choosing heads

Just heard back from CB, those heads are not actually ported / flowed as suggested on the aircooled page, just they are pre cast for the bigger valves. Still at $500usd a pair with big valves & per cut for 90.5 when im getting quoted $800usd a pair for standard (long plug) heads that still need mach...

Re: choosing heads

Im not looking to build a racer but these dont look to be much more money than standard ones, like wise if im going down the 1776 route it seems sensible to spend a few extra $$'s & up grade the heads to get more out of the engine. So these would be suitable to use on a type3?, no special one off pa...

choosing heads

Im getting to the point where I need to chose parts for my engine rebuild and thought asking is the best research!! Re: Engine rebuild project

Thats what appeals to me about the 1776 option, most of the work is done by the machine shop & you dont need to go mad with the up grades as the power in crease in in the cc's not the higher performance parts.

Re: Engine rebuild project

Sounds like you are in a sweet place, to be honest one of the big things holding me off from going for the 1776 is the fact that I dont know anyone who who be able to help hands on without charging to do so that is!! I would be very interested in reading what specs / work he's suggesting for the eng...
