Reproduction fuel tanks,
Reproduction fuel tanks,
Is there any company that makes repro fuel tanks for type 3's. I have just discovered a leak from my tank that was repaired by me about 6 years ago. Now its starting to show a damp spot just by the fuel outlet pipe. I originally sealed the inside of the tank with a resin solution, and jb weld or similar around the outlet pipe.I just thought I would check with you guys to see if any supplier popped up in the last few years. Thanks

Re: Reproduction fuel tanks,
I don't think any were ever made unfortunately!
Silver soldering works, & it's not as scary as You'd think- fill the tank with water or carbon dioxide, or soluble oil for a couple of days, though it'll probably knacker the resin coating
Or tell us what spec tank you need, ie carb or FI, lhd/rhd & year.. We all have spares stashes, then We'll worry about how to get it to you

Re: Reproduction fuel tanks,
Stock 1600 carbed engine 1972 RHD vintage. And based in Ireland, so shipping may be an issue.
I have tried a layer of fibreglass resin on the outside of the tank this time, and internally a small amount of resin around the base of the outlet pipe.
Its not worth soldering arount the tank dues to probably numerous places to solder. I am toying with re welding a new beetle tank, if its anywhere near the size but haven't checked yet.
Fingers now firmly crossed .
Thanks

Re: Reproduction fuel tanks,
Thats an option for sure. I thought i could just buy a tank and throw it in ha ha. I have done what i done 6 years ago and used a resin used in the film industry. It worked fine up until one week ago and a new damp spot appeared on the tank. Have just redone it now, and it seems fine, but will keep an eye on it. Thanks

Re: Reproduction fuel tanks,
I'm planning on speaking to Danny next week, in case He sees one anywhere
I take it you've seen the new tanks around the £300 mark?
Worst case scenario, is that I have a FI tank I could let go of- Is it really so difficult to ship to Ireland?

Re: Reproduction fuel tanks,
Shipping is not difficult. Paying for it is, its bloody expensive ha ha. I have seen the new ones but for lefties, and shipping from the US is expensive too.

Re: Reproduction fuel tanks,
LHD or RHD ? Fuel Injection or Carburettor ? Rhod Grub had some NOS Type 3 Fuel Tanks in the John Forbes Automotive collection. He accidentally sold me a NOS LHD Fuel Injection Tank then later swapped it for a NOS RHD Non Fuel Injection Tank after we realised the mistake. He may still have some.

My car is a 72 Fastback RH drive and duel carbs stock setup. Shipping and Irish customs is gonna be an expensive issue depending on its location . My son is working in london and will be returning home soon.

Find someone who is planning to visit Ireland who will bring it over for you ?

Re: Reproduction fuel tanks,
I think FI can be modified to do the job. It`s surely only a matter of blanking the Fuel Return ?
Rhod Grub is aware and will check what is still available in the John Forbes Automotive parts next time he is at the storage. I have the NOS Type 3 RHD non Fuel Injection Tank I bought from there but would be stupid to let it go of course.
