Type 3 Engine - Engine Stand
I have a question about using an engine stand for my 1600cc Fastback engine. I have the standard floor standing, with wheels type engine stand with four lugs for connecting to the engine block. My question is, can I safely use it for the Fastback engine or is the engine too heavy? I don't want the engine to end up on the garage floor in bits.

If thats the case it will be fine, the complete engine is under 200kg. So as long as your stand is rated for more than that it will be fine. Ive have over 20 various aircooled egines types 1 to 4 on my stand with out issues.

Yes that's exactly the type of stand. I suppose with the engine block being a type of alloy I always fear that it might not be strong enough to support the weight of the engine, having said that I did use it for my Trekker engine when I was restoring it. Thanks for the reply.

An engine stand doesn't do you much good in all honesty with a type 3 engine- You can't put the flywheel on, so you cant set the endfloat or install the flywheel oil seal, and without the flywheel on, you can't tighten the front pulley. You might not even be able to get the fanhousing on.

Thanks for that, I'm not quite at the stage of rebuilding the engine and the engine is complete and as it came out of the car. It was a runner, not brilliant but running so at this point I'm not sure how much rebuilding will be needed. I used the engine stand when I was restoring my Trekker/Thing and found it quite useful.

You can buy adapters specifically for air cooled motors that work with engine stands - they have a ring that connects with the bell-housing rather than relying on the 4 contact points. Not a requirement but they work really nicely and make the taking on and off really easy.

I've got the usual Machine Mart type as shown above, but I agree you need a VW type adaptor to make the most of it, like the one in the advert for Porsche/Beetle etc.
