New Front discs
New Front discs
Where is the best place for me (Ireland) to buy 2 new front discs.
My own are a bit on the thin side even without another skim. Currently 8 mm but in a very poor state, thats why
i suspect the uneven braking on the front is due to the right hand disc braking surface is definitely not the full width of the disc,
so thats where the uneven braking is coming from.
thanks,
tim

Re: New Front discs
It depends on the year of your car- if it's earlier, you can get them pretty much anywhere, if it's Late, look for Porsche 914 discs
Machine 7 would normally be my first port of call

What year Porsche and model should I be looking for, thanks

Re: New Front discs
Same year, Porsche 914 Front or VW 411/412 ( the porsche discs will have a 411 part number !)
You'll also need MK2 golf rear wheel bearing kits
https://www.machine7.com/product.php?xP ... &xSec=1003
They do occasionally pop up at swapmeets/ebay & prices vary considerably
If you need the pad fttg kit, Volvo 240 same year
Any problems, come back to this - I might have a suggestion!

Re: New Front discs
Most of the European suppliers seem to have them in stock

Re: New Front discs
That paruzzi link is for a disc that is 11 mm. Mine currently is 8mm, so I doubt its lost 3 mm
The 01270 is 9.5mm which probably sounds better.
Is that the only difference between the 01270 and the 31270.
There is probably a number stamped somewhere on my own that I can double check on the outer edge I presume.

Re: New Front discs
01270 is Beetle
The double check would be the spacing between caliper bolts- if they're 52mm ish, then you need the beetle disc, if 75mm ish you need the 411 disc
Paruzzi are very good at answering questions, so it wouldn't harm to get them to check the thickness
I'll check the thickness of the nos pair I've got this afternoon

Re: New Front discs
Probably will go with Paruzzi as I dealt with them before, and I wont get caught for customs and tax if i buy from the uk
01270 is marked up as type3 to 71

Re: New Front discs
Disc diameter and thickness sounds like a match to mine, although my disc is now 8 mm thickness.
My bolt distance on the caliper is 76 mm as far as I know.

Re: New Front discs
From the vin number 3122072260 I would say its December 71 as the manufacture date, but registered in 1972

My new discs are 11mm
That one won't fit & you'll knacker a new set of bearings proving yourself wrong

I dont want to be wrong, thats why I am asking for guidance from the forum on this, and as my manufacture date is so close to what could be eitherpurplepeter wrote: ↑24th October 2021 - 5:01pmMy new discs are 11mm

disc I have not discerned exactly which one it is.
How do i know if its the 9mm or 11 mm disc I need, is there a way of measuring anything on the disc that will pinpoint it,
apart from taking it off and scouring the surface for a number.
I dont want to be wrong, its too expensive,

Re: New Front discs
The 01270 disc would have 52mm caliper bolt spacings & has a type 3 part number as well as the type 1 number
it does state July 71
Offset from the face of the disc to face of the hub is different between the 2 discs (Hence different calipers)
3170 disc will have 76mm caliper bolt spacing & has the correct type 4 number
I guess you could measure from the braking face of the disc to the hub face (where the wheel sits) & ask me or paruzzi to do the same. I don't think I've got a type 1 disc to compare against

Re: New Front discs
Thankyou. I just found on samba that the telltale sign is the wheel centre boss on the out side. Mine are the same as the top picture, and now 8mm in thickness, and very poor surface that is clearly tapered towards the edge, so I have lost about 30% effective braking across the disc.purplepeter wrote: ↑24th October 2021 - 5:34pmThe 01270 disc would have 52mm caliper bolt spacings & has a type 3 part number as well as the type 1 number

Re: New Front discs
Went with Werk34.de and just got an email and tracking number. Super fast and 188 euro delivered.
If I had gone with a uk dealer i suspect it would have been a good bit more.

Re: New Front discs
Just wait for delivery and the jobs a good un..
Had a busy day with an oil change, tappet check and re setting. Only 2 tho which was great. But it then refused to run nicely, and then I'm thinking I must have fekked up the adjustments. So valves were checked, checked and re checked, all good. So there was no inclination to run nicely or accelerate. Checked and gapped the points, timed as well=no difference. Checked the carbs for putting in juice= jets were firing enough down the manifold to run. It fired up and tried to limp into life, but poorly. I knew I have an iffy ignition switch, but pressed in it seemed to function.
So it was either fuel or points I was thinking. Back to me stash and got a decent set of points, honed them nice and flat, installed and gapped them. It was now getting dark outside, so I tried for a start up. Fired up and gave a good blast on the accelerator. So called it a day and will time it tomorrow.
Took the old points into the light inside, and they were a bit pitted, which I have run with worse. But the two sparking posts were misaligned and not hitting nicely which is what i suspect was the problem.
I drove it for the last couple of weeks, and it has a great heater inside now, nice'n'toasty

Re: New Front discs
I got my new discs yesterday from Germany, and they were only ordered earlier in the week, very fast turnaround.
Winner for me is no customs duty to be paid.
I used to buy all my vw stuff from the UK, but since the increase in vat, customs ect due to brexit, I am forced to shop elsewhere.
I paid 188 euro for my discs which I suspect could have been 50% more with the duty if its anything like shopping from the US which is outside
EU as well for customs charges.

Re: New Front discs
Got a great spin out of the fasty today, after the hassle with the points earlier in the week. Balanced the carbs as well, and just need to dial in the volume screw later in the week. Its going like a watch now, and starts nicely hot or cold. Nice when a plan comes together. Its only got about 3oo miles since the top end overhaul so probably wont hit its peak for a while. But even now while not maxxing out the accellerator its got good power, and not a hint of any smoke from the exhaust. Great result so far
Re: New Front discs
When the discs are done I will be starting into the variant.
Plan is to take a few compression readings of the variant, and then pop it out and into the workshop for a nice project in the winter months.
Now that I am officially retired on the state pension, I have loads of time to occupy my self in a nice warm toasty shed. And what better way
than working on an engine under no pressure.

Re: New Front discs
Got the dics fitted this afternoon. The old discs were 8mm, the new ones were 11mm, and that 3 mm was some tough fit.
On both calipers the pistons were pressed right into the caliper, all 4 which I checked and re checked. But getting on the pads was bloody tight.
I ended up leaving out the gasket behind the pad. There was no anti roll shims, as they were never on it.
I suspect that the pads were for the 8 or 9.5 mm disc, as there are definitely different disc thicknesses, so I am assuming the same goes
for the pads if there are 2 eye pads, of differing thicknesses. But dont know that.
I will check out the brakes tomorrow and see how things turned out.
