Timing marks on 1972 - twin carbs - auto

Post by PP » 20th November 2021 - 2:50pm

Hello, I've bought a 1972 (April) Fastback - twin carbs/auto - from Germany.
Just want to check on which mark is the 0 btdc one - which I presume is correct timing mark for running?
Distributor is 311 905 205 AA
Would appreciate input from other twin carb 1972 owners - auto or manual........

The distance between the marks are c 10mm/10mm/5mm

[}---{}---{}
1 1 11

So is the 0 mark the left one or the second left one ?

On the Haynes manual etc the positions are give like below - maybe just a schematic of the above ??

[}---{}---{}
1 111

Regards

PP

thanks, I've seen that 3/1600 T 0690001 -
my point is that I am not seeing 1 111 , rather 1 1 11

would be grateful if someone could have a check on their marks for a 1972 twin carb......

Lots of info on samba for this.
Of course you could go old school and set number one for top dead centre, and then chark the pulley mark when you have, this clears up any doubt.

Thanks Tim for replies- my pulley marks are as in the first post from the Samba 1 1 1 1
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewt ... ?p=8947951
where the poster states that the second from left is 0 TDC - but as you say the best way to check this for sure is to get access to number one cylinder with the plug out etc. - I'll do this when I take off the air cleaner.

My engine is T 0986790 as you would expect from a March 1972 car.
The distributor is ; 0 231 167 016 (311 905 205 AA)
I haven't checked the vac can number yet...

I'm new to twin carbs, after 14 years with the relative simplicity and easy access of the K engine (1500cc- single port, single carb) - pulley marks ; 1 111 - left mark 0 TDC - timing to the second mark from left = 7.5 BTDC

Luckily the carbs dont make any different to the timing procedure or the pulley marks. But I have learned that that VW used quite a selection of pulleys over the years with different marks. It is not uncommn for people to change pulleys and distributors around. So I wouldnt time it from the engine number.

Timing mark - I cleaned the original timing sticker and it confirmed 0 TDC as the second mark to the left, and that the pattern was 1 1 11 which corresponds to what I see in the inspection hole
I havent got around to double checking it yet through no 1 after taking out the spark plug.....

Correct vacuum can for 311 905 205 AA ( Bosch 0 231 167 016 )

To date what I can gather is that 1 237 121 883 (883 on arm) is for 1972 FI Auto distributors (e.g. 311 905 AE/AF) and that
1 237 121 813 (813 on arm) is for 1972 twin carb Auto and Manual distributors.

Maybe the differences are minor and the cans can be exchanged ??
The advance curves of 311 905 AF/AE are on the Bentley Engine section page 55.

The differences will be small. But without all the data we wont know. Given how robust these engines are, im sure if you swap it and went for a drive, you wouldnt have any issue. But you may notice a flat spot or something similar.
