Type 3 Thermostat Fitting
Type 3 Thermostat Fitting
OK folks, I'm rebuilding my 1972 ish 1600cc engine and have fitted the thermostat and hooked up all the linkages to the flaps, including the spring. I have checked the thermostat and it appears to be working as it should i.e. filling the gap within the bracket when hot. My problem is that the movement of the flaps is not that much, they will go from closed to only about 20mm open, when hot. Is that enough of an opening or should they go to fully open? Any advice/suggestions would be very welcome.

Re: Type 3 Thermostat Fitting
There is a procedure for setting the hight correctly. Have you also got it located correctly in the bracket? With out the thermostat do the flaps operate fully?

Re: Type 3 Thermostat Fitting
Yes, the flaps are totally free. The thermostat is fitted into the bracket OK with the bottom of the thermostat fitting into the semi-square hole in the bottom of the bracket. Any idea where I can find a copy of the set up procedure?
Re: Type 3 Thermostat Fitting
Its in the haynes manual if you have one? Ive not ill copy mine for you.

Re: Type 3 Thermostat Fitting
Yes, I have the Haynes manual but I haven't seen any thermostat procedure but I will check tomorrow. Thanks for your help.
Re: Type 3 Thermostat Fitting
Found it! Don't know how the hell I missed it. Thanks again.
Re: Type 3 Thermostat Fitting
Going by the Haynes Manual procedure the thermostat should open to 46mm at 65-70c my one only opens to 42.2mm however the flaps are opening and closing, not as wide open or closed as they should be but I may just go with it as it is.
Re: Type 3 Thermostat Fitting
Glad you found it, at least they are opening and closing now. I would guess that the thermostat is getting tired. Keep your eye out for a replacement at a jumble or on ebay over the summer. Then youre prepared when/if it does fail
