I plan to take the body off the floor pan but it looks like someone has welded it on or used a few kilos of bluetack. Better look out the wire brush and cutting discs.

Par for the course on the restos of fastbacks.

Many interesting methods were used to keep the fasty on the road.
Most of them have innovative repairs putting off the only real solution.

If in doubt, cut it out. You will be glad you did.

Yes, a lot of innovative repair methods were used on my fasty and I wonder how the hell it got through all those MOT's. No use crying, my little TLC job is a major rebuild and resto so just get on with it. That's me talking to myself.

I found heat gun and careful gentle approach a lot quicker at peeling off underseal,
than any wirebrush. And a lot less messier as well.

The floorpan is as finished as it can be. All welding done and new brakes all round. Today I started on the body, see the photos. Pretty much every area of the body needs work. Either side of the rear window was obviously rotten however, a previous owner/cowboy had filled the hollow sections with expanding foam and put wire mesh on top then filler. I'm keeping away from my phone because I may just call the scrappy to come and pick it up.

Unfortunately those areas are filled with foam from factory believe it or not! Beetles are the same!

Thank you for that. I never knew that and I didn't think expanding foam was on the go in 1972 but it must have been. Google tells me it was invented around 1937. Here am I blaming some cowboy.

Yeah, I expect it was a means of sound proofing. Unfortunately its also a water trap. My fasty was the same and I had to cut it open and dig the bulk of it out.

Was your fastback rotten below the vents at either side of the rear window like mine?
