Kinky Mick has a RHD Type 3 tank- https://www.kinkymicks.com/ or find him on facebook- Mick Tattersall
Danny Lord has one as well, but His is for FI so has an extra outlet
The problem with a beetle tank will be the track rods.
I used thinners & gravel to clean my tank out, followed by a purge with an airline oiler

Mig weld is porous and it will weep, thats why I suggested finding a friendly local tig welder. Hopefully there is someone near you with the kit and skills
Thanks for the tip, never realised that. I,m out in the boonies , so no tig welder near me.
Checked yesterday for the nearest tank repair specialist. nearest one is in Dublin, 60
miles away.

So does that mean my option now is down to soldering in a new piece??

I,ve read a lot by tank repairers who mig weld patches, and then lead solder
any pin holes.

Fi tank is collection only from Birmingham, so shipping or courier costs
would be high enough

MY son is going to epoxy the tank inside with the industrial stuff he uses in the film industry,
as he is a prostethics technician with access to the top quality stuff.

So what I need now is a sealed tank as a former.

So me mig skills, plus one or two pinholes will do

... and if weld, grind, weld grind, repeat doesn't work, you can always fall back on chemical metal. I have used it to repair a cylinder head on my compressor.

I,ve gone straight to chemical metal as I,m dubious about blowing bigger holes in an
already suspect tank.
As I only need a tank shaped former to pour in the epoxy, it will serve its purpose.

Gets me back on track, and gives me time to organise a secondary tank for future
backup options.

Repair done using liquid metal, good enough now for an epoxy tank lining.

Just got the heads up from special fx tech, its industrial quality epoxy
that he could build a tank from this stuff, bullet proof he says.

Now my son wouldn't tell porkies to his dad now would he :paranoid: :paranoid:

Well he made this from scratch, so he must know something

Just spent the day fitting the new seals and chrome on the 2 rear side windows.

I would prefer to be waterboarded, than fit another 2 on my own.
As I could not get a helping hand today, I had to fit them on my own.

And another 2 tomorrow, front and rear screen. But at least gravity will
lend a hand, maybe a ratchet strap too.

The things we do for classics

Looks like your son is a talented chap! Lets hope he can help you out.

You should have a but more luck doing the other two windows, did you lube the seal? Some silcone grease of spray is ideal to help it slide in. I found the rear window was very hard work, I started the bottom and came up as I found gravity pulled the glass out if i went the other way and because you are so close to the parcel shelf there is no way to recover. But the front screen was easy. Id fitted those starting at the top of bottom. Though I will admit the bottom was the easiest of all

Son would have been a great help, but at the moment he is working on a film in Prague,

So its just me on this. yeah I had silicon spray, and started at the bottom of the windows.
Same method tomorrow I,m thinking. I,ll get there.
Classics do tend to challenge you for sure, all good though.

Spent all day yesterday, and 4 hours today. Window has been in and out
about 4 times, and still I cant get it fitted, with or without the chrome.
Loads of silicon spray too, and still no joy,
And i,ve just pulled out the last of my 3 hairs...

Walking away now for an hour or two for a break.

At the moment its all in bar the middle of the top centre 6 inches,
which is off the ledge about4 mm, and despite my judicious smacks with
a soft face mallet and a softish block, still no joy. So I,ll have to try and take it out again.

I opted to fit the top first, work down the sides, then the bottom last,
to see if it was any better. Its finally in,

but having said that, it took sheer brute force, 2 ratchet straps, and a big
F%^$$ing hammer..
I,ve fitted 15mm laminated security glass, walk on glass rooflights, and mezzanine
platform glass back in the day. I never used such force on any of these, nor any other car.

The only thing that changed in this window was the seal. Ope was the same as before,
and needed no repair at all. And the glass was the original. Is it down to the seal??

Rear window was all the grief for the past few days.

Front window is all prepped now, rubber, chrome, and all
greased up. All ready for a pre emptive strike first thing in the morning

It's the seal, mine was similar. I remember spending a good few hours at it, though i did it in the middle of summer

Sounds right, and me doing it this time of year is probably a factor to, due to the
cold.
And boy did I give it a good old lashing to get it in.

The front seal seems to be a lot more flexible, so tomorrow will tell

Finally the end of the window saga.

Front window popped in after a little over the hour. Went well.
Seal down the left hand side outer, is about 1 mm off the face
of the body, for about a 3" run. I suspect the seal edge from storage.

But I left on the ratchets to see if it eases down, then a well placed tap or two
this evening.

Not to forget this body is suspended 4' above the chassis from the roof, by 4 ratchet straps.
I felt like the last remaining member of the great Wallendas going for the triple somersault.

Here are the thermostat housings. Covered in layers of underseal, as was everything
else under this car in an attempt to hide its condition

And after all the cleaning, inspection and refinishing, and the new gasket made from nebar material.

More surprises today in my engine stripdown for new gaskets and cleanup.

Not only are my cooling flaps missing, but I,ve found pistons that I dont believe are stock,
with a diameter of 186.5 mm.

I can see some branding on it that I have not come across before. And the cleanest heads I have ever
seen on an engine strip down.

Comments welcome,
